Lessons in Assertiveness

A Cut Above

Dear Dr. Mutt,

I am a pure bred Portuguese water dog. I'm supposed to know how to swim, but I'm not so sure I do because we live in the city. But I don't mind getting a bath, and I love to race in the rain! My problem is that I have long curly hair that falls in my face and hides my eyes. This blocks my vision when I race with the mutt next door. He has real short hair and can see where he's going. Would it be un-canine if I begged my master for a haircut? I wouldn't want to be called a sissy.

Hampered in Houston

Dear Hampered,

It is not considered un-canine to get a haircut; many dogs do. I must warn you though. Some masters go a bit overboard with the clippers. If you trust your master's taste explicitly, then by all means beg for the haircut; but if you do not, tie up the loose hair in a top-knot. You are related to the poodle, and this wouldn't be out of line. Just don't tie on a bow.
