Poetry: Pirates Never Come The Front Way

Pirates Never Come The Front Way
by Diego Santiago
Drake and Morgan
did not air-kiss
at one's front door.
They told their m'hearties
to ignore
and take from behind.
A true pirate seizes
ornate facades and friezes,
the riches displayed to impress
and not to share,
and ignores the
weapons that point forward ---
the cannons of Puerto Bello
and all
loyal to their pirate search.
At each store and every perch
no bank of commerce is without
young men in varied costumes
looking out
with weapons
from the Napoleonic wars
protecting gold
and old ideas.
There must be some.
Are you the "they,"
or are you the one,
to cry out,
"Hey!
Pirates never come this way?"
And wil you be the one
to try another way?
And will you speak
to those who see two sides
to thought
and to those who seek
to widen the path between the sea
and to the singers of new songs,
and the indigenous old songs
that need to be sung,
and to those who share
and post no guards?
Tell them then
the secret of new beginnings,
of ships that carry
cargos
of possibilities
that will not be plundered,
of hopes and dreams,
and people who look behind
to see what has been left behind,
and who look ahead
to see where they are going
and of two way streets
meant to be traveled.
