Growing recognition for Gaenor Speed's second career
Gaenor Speed's paintings, photographed by Eric Jackson
Gaenor Speed, a native of Australia, came to Panama as a nurse for the US Department of Defense. A world traveler, scuba diver and adept at shotokan karate, she has practiced various arts for years, from ceramics, photography and stained glass in the 80s and 90s to a more recent interest in quilting. But since the US military closed out its operations at Gorgas Hospital and she stayed on to retire here, Speed has dedicated more and more time to her painting which, if buyers, galleries and critics are useful guides, are very good. The works shown here will mostly be part of her first solo exhibition, which will begin on February 3 and run through the rest of that month at the Mery Palmer Galeria in the Hotel Caesar Park.
Speed paints mainly with a spatula, frequently from photographs, in acrylic paints lately. Most of her recent work is of Panama, exploring landscapes, seascapes and subjects from our nature and culture. Contact the artist by email at gaenor_panart@yahoo.com.
