You don't have to be a cholo to practice this Interior art form
The muñeco is temporary art, designed to be burned in New Year's bonfires. The effigies are most popular in Panama Oeste and Cocle, in the former venue in large part due to annual local contests held in Chame and San Carlos districts. The selection of characters for muñecos often reflect the cultural and political mood of the moment --- this time Sponge Bob and fugitive former Banco Nacional de Panama executive Bolívar Pariente were popular themes.
And then there's George W. Bush, as "The Cowboy Sheriff." Displayed on the Pan-American Highway at Lagomar in San Carlos district, it was made by Panama Canal retiree Scott Williams and businessman James Hattrick. Says Hattrick, he was a "fast draw indeed and a force to be reckoned with... till New Years at Midnight, when he met his match in a blaze of fireworks."
This muñeco took first place in the local contest, and the winners donated the $200 prize to the Teleton 20-30 for needy kids' health care.
