Wounaan basket weaving of
the museum-quality kind
Araceli Cabezon's basket, photographed by Eric Jackson
The indigenous Wounaan nation, whose members live in Panama and mostly in Colombia, is winning a global reputation for the excellence of their traditional basket weaving. As practiced by the Wounaan, basket design is mostly in geometric patterns (as distinct from the animals and many other themes depicted by Embera weavers). The way that you tell a really excellent bit of Wounaan basketry, once its appearance at a glance from a little distance appeals to you, is by an up-close inspection that reveals a fine and perfect weave. You also want to look at the basket from several perspectives, as the designs seen from the bottom and the inside of the work are as carefully thought out as the side views. The pattern in this particular basket is based on the heliconia flower.
The artist is a young woman who lives in Nueva Esperanza, near Chepo. You can contact her, or inquire about buying this basket, through Susan Little at susanlittle100@yahoo.com.
