Anona Kirkland, 1904-2005

Anona Kirkland, for many years the editor of the women’s and social pages of the old Star & Herald, has died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100. She was the dean of Panama’s small corps of English-language journalists and the local chapter of the National League of American Pen Women named their writing contests after her.

Anona was also the 2004 “Woman of the Year” for this country’s chapter of the Soroptimists International, and was honored along with seven other persons a few days after her death by the National Committee for Civic Values and Morals for the good examples she set over her lifetime.

Last year the National League of American Pen Women, host of the Anona Kirkland Writing Contests, ceased to exist. The Panama News would like to take this opportunity to announce that it will be a sponsor of a 2005 Anona Kirkland Writing Contest for Panama’s English-language writers, and to improve upon the scarce resources that The Panama News can bring to bear we’re also putting out the call for co-sponsors and people to do all the things that need to be done for a successful contest. The tentative target is to have the awards ceremony in September.
