It's peak marlin season on Panama's Pacific side
Here in the distance we see a fishing vessel approaching the marina between the Club de Yates y Pesca and the Hotel Miramar on Avenida Balboa on a Thursday afternoon. This is the time of year when the marlin are striking at Piñas Bay and other important Pacific sports fishing venues, and thus it's the busiest season for the oldest segment of Panama's eco-tourism industry, big game fishing.
These days the emphasis is on catching and releasing the big billfish, so that they can live to fight another day and produce more offspring to keep this fishery alive. But commercial longliners and purse seiners, usually of foreign origin and sometimes operating illegally within protected sports fishing areas or marine reserves, may be killing more of our billfish than conscientious sports fishing enthusiasts save.
Despite the problems, our world renowned sports fishery thrives and our national angling organizations are determined that it will continue to do so.
