In January we got more than 42,000 visits, which is a new record for The Panama News. However, a lot of these were people visiting more than once because of the delays in finishing the January issues and if you look at the other statistics we bounced back from our usual holiday slow season but only back to about the number of readers we had throughout the fall. Unlike any other online publication that we know of in Panama, we publish the readership figures we get from our web server. And unlike the daily newspapers and television stations tend to do, we don't pass out inflated numbers in a deceptive attempt to defraud gullible advertisers. There really do need to be laws and independent verification services, but we're not waiting for any of that to be honest about the numbers of people we reach. Such numbers are important for those who would make informed and economical ad purchasing decisions, but then such choices are often done by ad agencies with undisclosed special relationships with certain media or by institutions with political, nationalistic, linguistic or racial attitudes that trump business considerations. But let the rabiblanco ad cartel play its games: they're losing market share, everyone who observes the industry can see it, and sooner or later advertisers will recognize that their competitors are stealing a march on them in the relatively affluent English-speaking community by placing their ads in The Panama News.
