Lessons in Assertiveness

On Charming
Dear Dr. Mutt,
My name is Cato. I am a philosophical feline who wishes to offer advice gratis to your Canine readers, so it behooves them to sit up and pay attention.
As long as the Canine caters and slobbers to humans, it will never achieve the greatness of the Feline. Ergo, a dog must think and act independently, just as a cat does. So here are three important rules to follow:
1. Man may whistle, but do not answer immediately.
2. Man may call, but do not look his way.
3. Man may scold, but do not take him seriously.
Do this, and we will remove the adjective "dumb" which precedes your name.
One may be man's friend, but not his BEST friend. Leave that to the horses.
Dear Facetious,
Thanks for the advice, but canines and humans have had a mutual understanding which predates the ice age. And though we may not always benefit from the relationship, we do not take lightly the title of Man's Best Friend. We've earned it. What you take for dumb is just our dogged attempt at friendship.
In that same vein, canines have tried to befriend felines and have met with success on occasion, but not to our complete satisfaction. So we'll keep trying.
