Dear Dr. Mutt,

I am so depressed. This morning the master gave me a new water bowl. At first, I was excited because it's bright and shiny. My old bowl was made of green plastic and had cracks in it so it leaked and looked rather grungy. The master made a big deal of filling my new one to the top with fresh water and placing it in the shade so the water would stay cool. All this was great, and I felt on top of the world and truly loved, but when I approached the bowl to take a drink, I saw this stranger looking back at me. All I could do was stare back in horror. What happened to my nose? How did it get so big without my knowing? When did my ears begin to flop? Am I getting old? I don't want to go near that bowl again!

Dear Mirrored,

A human poet once wrote that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. In other words, how do you see yourself? There's nothing wrong with a big nose and floppy ears. They sorta go with the terrain and are quite useful, especially if you keep them in good working order. A big nose can sniff out the tasty treats hidden in the flower beds, and the floppy ears help to keep out the dirt and dust carried by the wind.

As for getting old, that too is a question of attitude. I personally consider myself a mature mutt, and so should you. And as for the shiny water bowl, try smiling when you drink. It may make you laugh. And that works wonders on the face.
