Diablos and congo dancing in Portobelo
photos by Leslie Aldredge
In a country with a white minority political and economic power structure, it has been convenient for those on top to characterize all black Panamanians and their culture as “Afro-Antillean.” But of course, the Spaniards brought African slaves to the isthmus and such places as Fort San Geronimo and the Customs House in Portobelo were built by these black people. Then there were the Cimarrones, slaves who ran away to the bush to found their West African-styled villages, where certain cultural forms persisted, some little-changed to this day, others overlaid with later veneers of Catholic and Spanish cultural influences. Colon-style diablitos and congo dancing are examples of these.

The traffic was outrageous

And people came from miles around, and across the ocean, to catch this show

But this is a place where the "time is money" culture never quite caught on

And everybody had a good time

There were colorful ladies

And enchanted men

It wasn't just one devil that made them do it

And what did Elijah Muhammad say about the nature of the devil?

These look like herbivore teeth, so maybe the flesh-eating bit is a myth

There were noisy little devils

And furry devils

And some with horns, which may belie the influence of Western Christendom on the diablito tradition
