Helping poor families in Nata get their kids back to school
This is the time of the year when Panamanian kids go back to school, and in a country where nearly half the people live in poverty this entails some very hard choices. Will the family eat, or will it buy school uniforms for the kids? All too often it comes down to that, although once school starts many students eat better because of school nutition programs. The Muchachas Guias --- Panama's Girl Scouts --- are pitching in to eliminate the back to school dilemma for needy families in the Nata area of Cocle province. They took a collection and assembled packets of food staples and school supplies to distribute, so that the start of the school year is not a time of hunger. Here we have scout leaders putting together packages of noodles, corn meal, cooking oil, sugar, salt, rice, lentils, coffee and canned fish at the group's headquarters in Panama City.
