Return to Fort Kobbe
poetry by Diego Santiago
It was America again
in a far off place
a pin on a map
with Freedom’s face.
Red, White and Blue,
a special race,
that came and went
and left no trace
of what they brought
&and the things they knew ---
Of how
To make straight lines
and shine a shoe
and dig a hole
and climb a pole.
And how to stand
and how to build castles in the sand.
A fence now protects an empty space
where God Bless America once took place,
And guards the homes that stay as they were
and swing sets sway in a phantom allure.
No longer is it the American way
Nobody marches in close order drill
to pray at the chapel on top of the hill.
Nobody follows
the chain of command
where you salute the Chaplain
and agree, to a man.
There is nobody left
to hold such a view,
of what they were once
and what they once knew
and how they sang of God
while their numbers grew.
What happened was this
and it was the same I am sure
that happened to them on their very last tour,
The natives got restless and their leaders got bold.
they said to each other it’s time
they were told,
They would have to be
America some place where it’s cold.
They would have to leave their Panama grounds
it was best for the jungle to make its own sounds.
When I returned to Fort Kobbe
I heard jungle-speak
When the people are silent
the monkeys all shriek
and parrots talk parrot and not human talk
and all over the sidewalks the coatimundi walk
And,
nobody follows
