Belisario Porras, the Liberal caudillo

On the eve of this country's independence, the Thousand Day War devastated Panama as well as much of the rest of Colombia. From the deaths of some 500 Liberals at a battle at a Calidonia bridge at the war's outset to the betrayal and execution of Liberal guerrilla leader Victoriano Lorenzo at the end, Panama's Liberals lost many of their most capable people. Most prominent among those left standing was Belisario Porras, who at the time was against Panama's separation from Panama, but went on to dominate Panamanian politics from the 1910s through the early 1920s. This is his statue in the Panamanian plaza that bears his name. Photo by Eric Jackson
