The perks of office

The rector of the University of Panama is chosen by a weighted voting system by students, professors and administrators, and the job carries certain perks. The assumption of the title "Rector Magnífico" is one of the privileges to which the current rector has taken advantage, as is the right to name a campus street after himself, as we see here. The National Assembly is considering legislation submitted by the rector and his supporters, which among other things would allow him to fire tenured professors who annoy him with their criticism.
