Winston Churchill may
have denigrated him as a "naked fakir," but in the end Mohandas K. Gandhi
defeated the colonialism for which Churchill stood and led India to
independence from the United Kingdom. That monumental political victory was
marred by partition and inter-communal violence that broke Gandhi's heart
and led a Hindu fanatic to assassinate him for refusing to join in or
condone anti-Muslim agitation. But even if he was shot down, his importation
of the nonviolent Jain philosophy of ahimsa into Hinduism and his
outreach to people of good will of all faiths made Gandhi the most important
religious leader of the 20th century --- even though he was a lawyer and
activist rather than a member of the clergy --- and his thinking was adapted
and applied to the United States by another great leader, Martin Luther King,
Jr. Both Winston Churchill and M. K. Gandhi are honored in Panama City, the
former by a street in Paitilla and the latter by this bust at the University
of Panama and another large statue near the National Assembly's Palacio
