A hole in the new marine mammal sanctuary law, a worthy artist, etc.

Obnoxious loophole in marine sanctuary law

Contrary to what you wrote "The National Assembly has passed and President Torrijos has signed a law that makes all of Panama’s territorial waters and exclusive marine economic zone --- more or less two 200-mile-wide strips off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts respectively --- into a marine biological reserve where the hunting of whales and other marine mammals is strictly prohibited."

HUNTING for the LIVE HARVEST of marine mammals for the COMMERCIAL use of foreign aquariums and recreational theme parks IS PERMITTED. Panama's Pacific and Caribbean waters are home to hundreds of species of marine mammals, reptiles and amphibians --- including humpback whales, dolphins and sea turtles.

Are you aware of the trauma inflicted and mortality rate of marine mammals, reptiles and amphibians during Live Harvest?

Are you aware of the reduced lifespan of marine mammals, reptiles and amphibians in captivity?

With this in mind, I propose the creation of a unique Real World Aquarium where local fisherman trained in spotting and approach techniques offer comfortable transportation and accomodations in reconverted Bolicherras to tourists, researchers and scientists wishing to see and study Panama's rich marine eco-system.

Artist gets deserved recognition

Thank you for the fine picture of artist Jorge Dunn, at his usual "studio" location.

As an owner of some of his work, I have received many compliments from art  "experts" who are amazed at his talent.

Sr. Dunn is a national treasure. I hope the international art world does not recognize this too late to pay some tribute to him in his remaining years.

Finds us useful

I have recently been thinking of traveling to, and perhaps retiring in Panama.

During my research I have discovered your newspaper. I find it quite informative.

Just thought I'd drop this line to say thank you for supplying an English- speaking newspaper for those of us who do not speak Spanish.
