communityAlso in this section: Jazz singer Barbara Wilson dies by Eric Jackson As this issue of The Panama News was in production the Panamanian jazz scene was plunged into morning with the death of singer Barbara Wilson. Described in La Prensa by pianist Danilo Pérez as “Panama’s Billie Holiday,” Wilson spent a lifetime singing in this country’s bars and clubs but despite a talent recognized by her peers and easily recognizable by any casual fan who heard the music she made, never realized two of her lifelong musical ambitions, to record an album and to do a performing tour of the United States. Talking to this reporter between sets at Las Bovedas last year, she said that if only she could get a chance to sing in North America’s jazz clubs she would gain just enough recognition and paying work to raise her standard of living. But this was not to be. An outstanding daughter of Panama’s English-speaking West Indian community, Wilson had suffered for many years from diabetes and a poverty-stricken lifestyle that kept her from properly controlling the disease and its symptoms. Panama’s jazz community, led by Danilo Pérez, will hold a musical memorial for Barbara Wilson on June 2 at the Take Five Wine Bar in the Casco Viejo.
