Sadly, too many people still don't get his message

So what would the Mahatma think? One of Panama City's most noteworthy pieces of public art, this statue of Mohandas K. Gandhi across Avenida Central from the legislature, was in the thick of mob violence in recent days, once when the police with little provocation attacked peaceful demostrators and journalists, and on another occasion when small gangs of youths threw things at police and vandalized traffic signals until the police finally reacted --- mostly by arresting people who had been peacefully exercising their right to protest against the government's social security law. Gandhi, of course, was the leader of India's independence movement, an apostle of nonviolence who was slain by a Hindu fanatic for his opposition to mob violence between his country's Hindu and Muslim communities on the occasion of British India's partition between India and Pakistan.  Photo by Eric Jackson
