Boquete real estate boom continues

The building boom of the past several years in and around Boquete shows no sign of letting up. Due to its cool mountain air and proximity to the spectacular Volcan Baru National Park, Boquete has become very popular with North American and European retirees.

The rise in real estate prices is of some concern to area farmers who want to continue their vocation rather than sell their land for development. The higher property values are driving up their taxes while the prices they fetch for their oranges, coffee, vegetables or other crops go up and down without any relationship to the land rush.

As one might expect, the boom has brought in a few undesirable elements as well. One example was Dan Brown, the fugitive Alabama rapist who was speculating in Boquete real estate until his capture and return to the USA last year.

Despite such concerns, more retirees are coming to town every day and it looks like that trend will continue.
