Teaching the kids what's at stake at Clayton

It wasn't exactly a wilderness camping experience, but it was an opportunity for environmentalists and historic preservationists to network and pass on knowledge and sensibilities to a younger generation. Over the weekend of June 4 and 5 a group of 30 adults and children from Chiriqui province came to the former Fort Clayton in Panama City to teach kids about what's worth preserving and defending in this world, and to share experiences among those who successfully fought off Mireya Moscoso's attempt to put a road through the Volcan Baru National Park and those who are trying to block the construction of a subdivision in a forest through which the colonial-era Las Cruces Trail runs.

There were hikes in the woods and workshops in history, archaeology, tourism, urban planning, ecology, birdwatching and other subjects. A younger generation was introduced to the conservationist world view, and adult activists formed new networks and alliances for battles underway and yet to come.
