opinionAlso in this section: An open letter for the freedom of expression by Guido, Alida, Carmenza, Stella & Rita Spadafora A few weeks from the 20th anniversary of the murder of our brother Hugo and the consequent death of our father Carmelo Spadafora, the recent news about our brother, Winston Spadafora, obliges us to publicly express ourselves. At a crucial moment in the history of Panama, at which civil society was making an effort to promote the consolidation of democracy, transparency and equity, we remember with pride the leadership of Winston and other valiant Panamanians, who in the most difficult moments of the dictatorship fought to achieve these noble goals. However, when we think of the “before” and the “now,” we find it very hard to understand the reason for some of Winston’s actions, especially those which attack the freedom of expression. The struggle in which he participated, as leader of the family, would not have been possible without the decided support of important independent news media and of valiant journalists who, despite the great obstacles that the dictatorship imposed, did not let up in their brave informative labor, giving continuous and objective coverage of the facts. We urge Winston to reflect above all else upon the teachings and example of our father, who always acted with rectitude and transparency, with justice and public ethics, always giving detailed accounts of his performance in all the public posts at which he served. In particular we urge him to withdraw the lawsuits he has filed against journalists and news media.
