Cool Internet sites

Aeroperlas

http://www.aeroperlas.com/

Panama’s principal domestic airline.

Burning Man

http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/

The annual alternative arts and lifestyles festival that started in a San Francisco park but is now held in the Nevada desert.

Learn the Signs. Act Early.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/actearly/

From the US Centers for Disease Control, a page about developmental disorders that if only discovered when a child is tested in school are detected way later than they ought to be. This site also includes a developmental chart that’s useful for new parents and others who may be unfamiliar with the normal stages of development in a child’s first five years.

Punctuation

http://www.nyu.edu/classes/copyXediting/Punctuation.html

A good primer on American standard usages, courtesy of NYU. But wait a minute --- The Panama News consistently violates some of these rules! Ah, but most newspapers have their idiosyncrasies, and moreover Panamanian English is a 150-year-old phenomenon with West Indian and North American roots, plus Panamanian Spanish and other influences, a mix that doesn’t exactly add up to American Standard English.

Tales collected by the Brothers Grimm

http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/

A faithful English translation of 200 stories and 10 legends, minus the inane Walt Disney bowdlerization. The thing is, the Grimms were writing to preserve Germanic legends going back to pagan times rather than to entertain kids, and the translation of their masterpiece into a version of American popular culture that’s dumbed down so that the densest and most over-protected kids will get it is how most of us have been exposed to these great works.
