Remembering Captain Hoyte

by Frank Thomas W.

We regret to announce the passing of our brother and co-worker, Mr. Julian Hoyte.

Julian was one of the originals of 1956. He worked out of the Balboa district. In 1959, like others, he experienced what was then called a RIF. During that period he was re-employed as an ambulance driver at Gorgas Hospital, and also at the Gamboa Dredging Division. He returned to the Fire Division, moved on up to Fire Inspector, being a dedicated hard worker, where nothing could stop him. He moved through the ranks: Fire Sergeant, Lieutenant, EMT, then conquering all the obstacles and negativities in the then Canal Zone, he became the first local Panamanian to become a Captain of the Canal Zone Fire Department, breaking all the barriers of the so-called security clauses.

Julian just wasn’t a good officer, he was also a gentleman and a friend. If any one of the men goofed off for any reason, he would address him on a first name basis, letting him know how important it is to maintain discipline and to conduct oneself in a manner above and beyond.

He was born in Panama City, grew up in the Calidonia area, where he was known as El Flaco Julian.

Su trayectoria en la comunidad, como padre, abuelo, amigo y ciudadano era impresionante.

Funeral services were held on Friday October 7th at the Sacred Heart Church in Ancon. Interment was at Corozal Cemetery.

May his soul rest in peace.
