Free Casco Viejo tours

archive photos by Eric Jackson

The Office of the Casco Viejo is offering free guided tours of Panama City's historic Casco Viejo neighborhood. The area was the site of the walled city that was established after Henry Morgan's destruction of Panama Viejo in 1671, but three great 18th century fires destroyed almost all of the colonial era buildings there. The coolest architecture in the neighborhood, some of it preserved, some of it in ruins and some being or having been restored, mostly dates from the early 19th to the early 20th centuries.

The tours start on Saturday mornings at 9 am, from Plaza Francia. For more information, or to make reservations, call the Office of the Casco Viejo at 228-5314 or 228-3664, or contact them by email at boveda1@cwpanama.net.
