Disappearing bus art

Gallery & Museum Guide

Griffins always were rare...

...but soon you might not be able to see them anywhere in Panama City. Panama's bus art, something that pleases many natives and many visitors alike, has been disappearing for years for economic reasons. Then the Moscoso administration issued a regulation that buses must by color-coded according to their routes, which caused a lot of the decorations on buses to be painted over. Now the Torrijos administration seeks to replace the driver-owned diablos rojos with a monopoly that uses larger buses which are jointed in the middle to be able to turn on some of the capital's narrow streets. Unstated, so far, is whether the Torrijos transit plan contemplates the final abolition of artwork on city buses. But knowing that his father-in-law founded the ad cartel, and knowing the present administration's low regard for Panamanian culture, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see the new bus monopoly abolish the art of bus painting in favor of corporate advertising.
