Day of the Martyrs: This commemorates the event of January 1964, when a dispute over which flags should fly over the old Canal Zone resulted in a scuffle between high school students, in which the Panamanian flag carried to the old Balboa High School by protesters from the Instituto Nacional was torn, and serious violence ensued. All told 27 people were killed, Panama and the United States briefly broke of diplomatic relations and it was the beginning of the end of the Canal Zone. It’s now a national holiday, another day at the beach for a lot of Panamanians but also the occasion for nationalist and leftist political statements. These have for many years been peaceful, and though there may be some anti-American slogans expressed, Panama is not particularly dangerous for Americans on this day.
Coming Up... Third Annual Panama Jazz Festival: January 19-21, this time dedicated to the late jazzman Mauricio Smith, again organized by Danilo Pérez, with the Randy Weston African Group, the David Sanchez Group, the Kurt Rosenwinkel Group featuring Mark Turner, the New England Conservatory Ensemble, the University Panama Big Band, led by Vitin Paz with special guests, Santi Debriano and the Sounds of Ashé From the University of Massachusetts, the Carlos Garnett Quartet, Mauricio Smith’s Tribute Band and more acts to be announced
