Although the Transito Police will be out in force, there will be plenty of drunks on the road, so it’s better to make your plans so that you aren’t on the road this evening.

Day of the Martyrs: This commemorates the event of January 1964, when a dispute over which flags should fly over the old Canal Zone resulted in a scuffle between high school students, in which the Panamanian flag carried to the old Balboa High School by protesters from the Instituto Nacional was torn, and serious violence ensued. All told 27 people were killed, Panama and the United States briefly broke of diplomatic relations and it was the beginning of the end of the Canal Zone. It’s now a national holiday, another day at the beach for a lot of Panamanians but also the occasion for nationalist and leftist political statements. These have for many years been peaceful, and though there may be some anti-American slogans expressed, Panama is not particularly dangerous for Americans on this day.
