Walter M. Mikulich, 1912-2005

Walter M. Mikulich, who was for many years the basketball coach at Balboa High School in the old Canal Zone, died this past December 28 in Northern Michigan, where he retired.

Before his years in Panama Mikulich was a successful high school basketball coach in Breckenridge, Minnesota, and due to that period of his life was made a member of the Minnesota State Coaches  Hall of Fame.

Then World War II intervened and Mickulich joined the Army and served in the Mediterranean theater, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He mustered out of the Army at the end of the war at the rank of major.

Then Mikulich coached at Balboa for a quarter-century, and also taught history there. After retiring from the Canal Zone schools he returned to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Coach Mikulich is survived  by his wife of 62 years, Vivian Murhy Mikulich; son and his wife, Robert  and Molly, and their children, Adam and Luke Mikulich; sisters, Mary  Fudurich, and Sophie Maccani; brother, Victor; and many nieces and  nephews.
