section: Panama City's Carnival acts announced So now that we know that the main stage will be in front of the Contraloria (on Avenida Balboa across from the Hotel Miramar), do we know who will be performing on it? For the most part, we do. Although there will be a few more announcements and there are usually surprises during the festivities, more than 40 of the acts that will appear during the four-day party have been announced by the Carnival Commission. Olga Tañón and Víctor Manuelle will be there. The cumbia acts will be headed by Samy y Sandra Sandoval, Ulpiano Vergara y las Plumas Negras, Osvaldo Ayala and Manuel de Jesús Ábrego. Again we will have a strong merengue contingent from the Dominican Republic, led by Sergio Vargas, Eddie Herrera and Milly Quesada. Salseros to perform include Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Rojas, Tony Vega and Cheo Feliciano. Among the more prominent rappers will be Jimmy Bad Boy, Héctor El Bambino The Father, Ángel y Kris, El Comando Tiburón and Kafú Banton. El Símbolo will be coming from Argentina. Some of the other international acts that will take the stage include Moncho Rivera, Pedro Bull, Cano Estremera, Tabou Combo and David Pavón. Some of the other Panamanian acts are those of Iván Barrios, Roberto Delgado, Los Rabanes, Os Almirantes, Erika Ender, Alejandro Lagrotta, Mach and Daddy, Tropical Band, Monchi y Luca, La Orquesta La K-Shamba, Carlos López y sus 7 potencias, Colaquito Cortéz, Nenito Vargas, Tony King, Aldo Ranks, Orquesta Impacto, Orquesta Única, Principal, Ness, Aspirante, Sociedad Anónima y la Orquesta Oro Puro. These are the acts for the main Panama City celebration, but in the capital on Carnival Saturday and Sunday there will also be the Antillean Fair, with its lineup of Afro-Caribbean entertainers. Downstairs from The Panama News office one of those acts, the SAMAAP Quadrille Dancers, have been practicing their steps for the occasion. And of course, the biggest Carnival celebration of all will be in Las Tablas, where the Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo organizations will be competing with one another not only with rival queens but also by putting impressive lineups of musicians and dancers on their respective stages. There are also several other noteworthy Carnival celebrations in other places around the country, and because of the La Niña climatic effect we have been getting and its dry season rains we can be sure that there will be plenty of water in the Zarati River for Penonome's Water Carnival. Again this year the SITMAS national musicians' union has complained about the hiring of more foreign musicians than that organization would like. The union's stand, however, does not seem to have attracted a lot of sympathy among the Panamanian public at large.
