Home Run Derby 2006 Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Lee, the Aguadulce native who played in last year's Major Leage All Star Game, won this year's Nutre Hogar Home Run Derby. The charity benefit was held at the Rodney Carew National Stadium on January 28. Lee bested 2005 winner José Macías by a 20-19 margin. Macías was with the St. Louis Cardinals last year but has been released and may be going to Japan to play in the 2006 season. Other major leaguers in the competition at Cerro Patacon were Einar Díaz, who will play for the Cleveland Indians this coming season; Olmedo Sáenz, who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers; and the Baltimore Orioles' Dominican slugger Miguel Tejada. Also participating were Lee's brother Carlos Humberto Lee, who plays in the minor leagues; Sherman Obando, who has played professional baseball in the major leagues and in Japan; and Panamanian national team members Audes De León and Avelino Asprilla. Orioles pitcher Bruce Chen, who hails from Bocas del Toro, was also at the ballpark. Finishing behind Carlos Lee and Macías were Carlos Humberto Lee, followed by Audes De León and Olmedo Sáenz. Before the baseballs started flying out of the park there were a couple of celebrity softball games. More than anything, these proved two things: WBA junior flyweight boxing champion Roberto "La Araña" Vásquez is a gifted athlete, but his boxing prowess is by no means matched by his softball abilities; and Housing Minister Balbina Herrera is amazingly maladroit. It was a good time for all, and a sneak preview of several of the players who will represent Panama in the World Baseball Classic next month.
