Chiriqui vs. Veraguas in junior baseball tournament finale

National Junior Baseball Tournament

Veraguas wins game seven in extra innings

It was a back-and-forth thriller of a junior baseball tournament, the final series of which went to Veraguas, who had to play six games to get to a last game that went 12 innings before a run scored on a wild pitch let them go home with the trophy. This was the first time in 37 such tournaments that Veraguas won the championship, and this with a team that has played together since Little League and put in some outstanding international performances. The only other time a Veraguas team made it to the finals was 11 years ago.

Scouts from most of the major league organizations were on hand for the tournament, which should result in the biggest crop of professional contracts in years. The tournament's batting champion, however, made an even better business decision: Jesús Barroso left the Chiriqui team after the first round to return to his studies in the United States. Sadly, the NCAA was not represented among the scouts in this tournament.

Some of the better junior tournament players are now playing with their provinces' men's teams in the National Baseball Tournament.
