section: National Junior Baseball Tournament Veraguas wins game seven in extra innings It was a back-and-forth thriller of a junior baseball tournament, the final series of which went to Veraguas, who had to play six games to get to a last game that went 12 innings before a run scored on a wild pitch let them go home with the trophy. This was the first time in 37 such tournaments that Veraguas won the championship, and this with a team that has played together since Little League and put in some outstanding international performances. The only other time a Veraguas team made it to the finals was 11 years ago. Scouts from most of the major league organizations were on hand for the tournament, which should result in the biggest crop of professional contracts in years. The tournament's batting champion, however, made an even better business decision: Jesús Barroso left the Chiriqui team after the first round to return to his studies in the United States. Sadly, the NCAA was not represented among the scouts in this tournament. Some of the better junior tournament players are now playing with their provinces' men's teams in the National Baseball Tournament. Following is a list of outstanding performances in this year's tournament: Offensive leaders Batting Average: Jesús Barroso, Chiriqui: .550 Runs Batted In: Jorge Mendoza, Chiriqui: 17 Home Runs: Gilberto Muñoz, Cocle: 2 Stolen Bases: Rubén Tejada, Veraguas: 5 Pitching leaders Strikeouts: José Vargas, Cocle: 32 Won-Lost: Ricardo Montilla, Panama Metro: 2-0 Earned Run Average: Manuel Vega, Herrera: 0.00 over 22 innings Defensive leaders Catcher: Luis Quintero, Veraguas: 1.000 fielding average, 74 putouts, 12 assists, 0 errors First base: José Bravo, Los Santos: 1.000 fielding average, 65 putouts, 5 assists, 0 errors Second base: Julio Obaldía, Cocle: 0.980 fielding average, 27 putouts, 22 assists, 1 error Third base: Euribíades Velásquez, Los Santos: 0.941 fielding average, 9 putouts, 7 assists, 1 error Shortstop: Rubén Tejada, Veraguas: 0.959 fielding average, 25 putouts, 22 assists, 2 errors Left field: David Cedeño, Chiriqui: 1.000 fielding average, 10 putouts, 0 assists, 0 errors Center field: Wilford Brooks, Bocas del Toro: 1.000 fielding average, 25 putouts, 2 assists, 0 errors Right field: Marlon Mesa, Bocas del Toro: 1.000 fielding average, 13 putouts, 1 assist, 0 errors
