Scenes from INAC's
Caribbean Night in Plaza Catedral In many ways, it was a dress rehearsal for the Antillean Fair, which will take place on the Saturday and Sunday of Carnival on the grounds of the Museo Afroantillano, in Panama City near Plaza Cinco de Mayo. (INAC's event was minus the fair's amazing Caribbean food and beverage tent, to be sure, but it did feature some of the same performers.) Panama's West Indian culture is but one of the two main Afro-Panamanian roots, the other one descending from Africans who were brought to Panama by the Spaniards to be slaves. Although you won't find much mention of it in those reprehensible slick publications that tout Panama to American retirees as if we were the next logical step in the white flight that created suburbia, both of these black cultures have left a strong imprint on Panamanian society. The West Indians first established themselves here at about the same time as the Americans and the Chinese did, and all for the same reason, the construction of the Panama Railroad. Later waves of Caribbean immigrants worked to establish this country's banana plantations and on the French and American canal construction efforts.
