Panama's Girl Scouts at their summer camp north of Penonome photos courtesy of the Muchachas Guias Panama's chapter of the international Girl Scouts / Girl Guides movement, the Asociacion Muchachas Guias de Panama, has a campground on the Zarati River north of Penonome, and from January 31 to February 5 it was a busy place, with more than 200 scouts --- the most in many years --- participating in the group's annual campout. The campground has been expanded by a few more cabins over the past few years, and beyond that there's plenty of room to pitch tents. The Muchachas Guias are finally getting over a long and disruptive roof job at their national headquarters (which also houses The Panama News office), and have as one of their next capital improvement priorities the modernization of their campground's kitchen facilities. The present kitchen meets basic health standards and can serve hundreds of people at a time, but it's still pretty rustic, has limited equipment and isn't really suitable for teaching cooking skills to scouts who gather every year for the campout. The campground is for rent, and has played host to Boy Scout troops, Peace Corps volunteers and various other groups. It would be a perfect place for scout troops from colder, more northerly climes to use during winter break. Scouts in North America or Europe could use it during their summer vacations --- when school is in session here and peak tourism season is over and thus air fares are cheaper --- to see this part of Latin America.
