March 19 benefit for Spay Panama

Pat a Cat
by Dori Cohen

A group of animal-loving people here in the city have come together with the support of a few local artists and people of the community to hold a fundraiser for Spay Panama. Spay Panama is a non profit Spay and Neuter Clinic for the cats and dogs who live on the streets of Panama. (The group will, however, also spay your household pet for a nominal fee.)

Pat Chan and her incredibly dedicated staff travel through out the country saving thousands of lives of animals. They spare those whose lives would have been lived in the streets, trying and usually succeeding in an effort to get them placed in good homes, but returning them to the streets where they lived rather than killing them when they can’t find a home. It’s a no-kill policy, carried out in cooperation with the people who feed stray dogs and cats in keeping with Panamanian culture.

The motto of Spay Panama is: “WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ONE LIFE AT A TIME.” Its clinic spays dogs and cats every Wednesday and Saturday, saving many animals the horrors of street life with every operation.

But in addition to sterilizing one dog or one cat at a time, Spay Panama also works to educate people to take responsibility for their pets. The group also teaches how do care for them once they have decided to be responsible, in order to avoid the sad situations of homeless animals that result when people don’t take proper care --- things like what to feed them, their needs for water, shelter and exercise, and basic humane considerations. “Your dog is part of the family, and you wouldn’t chain a family member,” Spay Panama founder and director Pat Chan notes.

The date FOR THIS FUND RAISER is set for March 19th, Sunday, and will be held at the home and studio of artist Janet Levi. Several artists will be there exhibiting their works along with Food & Wine & Jazz.

There are three artists who are going to exhibit:

David Levi with his wonderful and fanciful creations of furniture,

Anamaria Zornes taking recycling to great new heights and

Janet Levi glorifying the animal world and the Afro-Antillian culture with her colorful bateas.

Adding enormously to the fun we will have live music: Gospel and Jazz with:

Marcelino Marshall with his moving voice and charisma,

Alfonso Lewis sweet sax and

David Levi on the skins
