Lessons in Assertiveness

Kibbles for Boots

Dear Dr. Mutt,

I’m a homeless street cat. I’ve lived on my own since I was a tabby so I know my way around town. Things have been okay until recently. With the city’s new recycling clean-up program, dining out on a daily basis has become more difficult. I can see the writing on the wall, and I don’t mean graffiti! I would like to get a job, preferably indoors, but I don’t know where to begin. Can you guide me?

Homeless in Houston

Dear Homeless,

Of course, I can guide you. Since you know the city, scope out three or four restaurants and hang around the kitchen doorstep. The owners like to keep their places vermin free so if you’re there, they may hire you.

But if the restaurant scene doesn’t suit you, pick a residence where young humans reside and patrol the yard free of charge for a while. Be demure and patient, but be persistent. Slowly move from the yard to sleeping near the door. The young humans may feel sorry for you and convince the older ones to let you stay. It’s as simple as that.
