Gustavo Araujo's protest about people who play ostrich in the face of environmental degradation

Earth Day installations in Parque Urraca will be up for a month
photos and article by Eric Jackson

On April 22 Panama City held its modest celebration of the 36th annual Earth Day, in the form of the inauguration of a month-long public art exhibition in Parque Urraca. The event's main organizer was the Fundacion Pro Mar, with co-sponsorship by the Panama City municipal government, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the Mossack & Fonseca law firm, Grupo Melo, Rino's Italian restaurant and La Prensa. The participating artists are Eduardo Navarro, Gustavo Araujo, Paola Schmitt, Afredo Bocanegra, Donna Conlon, Emily Zhukov, Carmen Tribaldos and Coqui Calderón. The installations will be on display at the park, across from the Hotel Miramar Intercontinental, through May 22.

Mayor Juan Carlos Navarro, who came to public office from the environmental movement and who has a relative among the artists, was there but let the vice mayor do the talking for the city. Among the small crowd on hand were many of the movers and shakers in many of the efforts to preserve what's left of Panama's threatened natural legacy.

The body parts in the tree are by Spanish photographer Alfredo Bocanegra

Paola Schmitt, another prominent local photographer who was also raised in Spain, created her own tree

Above and in the two photos below, American sculptor Emily Zhukov set up a simple scaffold, which allows people to look out over the waterfront --- a highly polluted one, sad to say --- upon which Panama City is set

Carmen Tribaldos contributed a work in textiles, paint and trash to the show

No, those aren't rose apples --- they're ballons put up by Eduardo Navarro

We almost lost American artist Donna Conlon's work to the street sweepers. Even though, relatively speaking, Panama is not a society that's heavily addicted to tobacco, such smokers as we do have leave enough litter to create plenty of material for sidewalk art
