Political season is underway at the University of Panama. If one judges by the banners and posters around campus, "Rector Magnifico" Gustavo García de Paredes, embroiled in scandals about a false diploma he signed and about allegations that his own doctorate isn't genuine, would be headed for a landslide victory. On the surface, one curious factor is that the campus radicals, who have the nastiest things to say about the PRD when they take to the streets to protest against the national government, are not openly criticizing the PRD rector. When one realizes that an offended university administration could take away campus business concessions that the student groups enjoy, however, the economic factors behind the militants' docile attitude become apparent.
