Also in this section: The scene at XOKO
The music scene revolving around Rómulo Castro (third from left) and his ever-shifting Grupo Tuira is now centered at XOKO in Panama City's El Cangrejo neighborhood. Rómulo Castro, the son of PRD political strategist and Ministry of Foreign Relations employee Nils Castro, was a protegé of Chuchú Martínez, a poet, playwright and philosophy professor who quit academia to become an army sergeant and General Omar Torrijos's aide de camp and closest advisor. Named after the river that's the Darien's main transportation route, Grupo Tuira combines a lot of modern Latin American influences, particularly the Cuban and Chilean nuevo son movement, with some more peculiarly Panamanian musical traditions. Rómulo Castro's best-known composition to date is the Grammy-winning "La Rosas de Los Vientos." If you read Spanish, see Rómulo's opinion on the canal expansion controversy in our Spanish-language "opiniones" section. Photo, taken at XOKO on June 7, courtesy of InfoArte
