Cool Internet sites

Contact-poisonous plants of the world

http://mic-ro.com/plants/

We have more of these in the tropics than they do in the temperate zones, you know. This English website from Germany doesn’t have Panamanian Spanish, but be aware that whatever you or anybody else cares to call it, you should never under any circumstances sleep under the Hippomane mancinella  L. tree --- manzanillo for those of you who know it by the local name --- and you would have to be an absolute idiot to make a fire for your beach party with its wood. (And no, those are not little apples akin to crabapples, even if you may find crab holes under these trees.)

Coping with miscarriage

It happens and it’s not the end of the world, but to those directly affected it may seem as if it is.

Pinhole Photography by Wanda Scott

http://www.wandascott.com/pinholecameras.html

In the face of the digital revolution, it’s often a good idea to get back to the roots. Ms. Scott demonstrates that one need not have expensive and fancy equipment to produce some fine photographic art. (But this reviewer still wants one of those new professional Olympus digital cameras, or maybe a Nikon.)

Psychedelic posters from the Fillmore

http://www.olsenart.com/fillmore1.html

The kids conceived in “The Summer of Love” would be approaching their 39th birthdays now. However, the psychedelic rock concert posters from back then are timeless. These are mostly the great San Francisco artist Wes Wilson’s work, but then there were others who worked in the genre, like Gary Grimshaw in the Detroit area, who also drove the quality of the art form upward. This artistic movement also contributed to and fed off of the underground newspaper and comix scenes, one of whose stars was Chicago-based Skip Williamson.

The Peabody Awards

http://www.peabody.uga.edu/

These are about excellence in US broadcasting. Although there is more broadcasting available these days, it seems that a lesser percentage of it is excellent than used to be the case. The good stuff, however, is definitely out there. To the extent that Panama has a difficult to impossible time selling its radio and television programming abroad, people in the industry can look here to begin to understand just one of the reasons why.
