Above, sticking out above the hilltop at the top center of the photo, you may be able to discern a concrete structure. These were the vaults of of the long-demolished construction-era Panama Canal Administration Building. This is what it looked like way back when:

 

 

It was part of the town of Culebra, once a bustling place:

 

 

Culebra Pass, the gap in the lowest part of the mountain chain between Alaska and Tierra del Fuego that marks the Continental Divide, was the site of major work for the old Panama Railroad. The French began digging here in their disastrous canal construction project, and later the Americans completed the job, as shown here:

 

 

But after the canal was built the Americans dismantled the town of Culebra, and a few days ago the Panama Canal Authority bulldozed one of its last remnants as part of its ongoing Culebra Cut widening project.
