Insecure Communications

 

Dear Dr. Mutt,

I live on a military base. Last summer, when I was a puppy, one of the controllers found me near a dumpster, and the command post voted to adopt me. They put me in charge of office security and named me COMSEC, which stands for Communications Security. They told me that if there’s a breach in security, I must alert the chain of command. They emphasized how important this is, but I’m not exactly sure where to find that chain! I’ve looked for it everywhere. It has to be around the office, right? If duty calls, I don’t want to mess up! What can I do?

Dear Mixed-up,

The chain of command is a figure of speech. It means the boss’s boss’s boss, the Top Dog, so to speak. It’s not a real chain. So stop looking for it. Just stay alert. Do what dogs normally do. Mark off your territory around the office, bark when strangers approach, be prepared to attack on command, and don’t bite the hand that feeds you, no matter how many that may be, unless it belongs to a stranger, of course. But be careful with this one. Lots of new humans come and go on military bases, and most are strangers for a while. You’ll just have to sniff them out and figure out who’s nice and who’s not.
