The Cage

Dear Dr. Mutt,

Life is miserable lately. For years we lived in a village and I roamed freely through the streets at all hours of the day and night, but lately the place has boomed and become a city, and the humans passed a leash law. Now I’m chained and caged. My life is hell. What can I do?

Richard Lovelace, a British poet, wrote:

 

Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage;

Minds innocent and quiet take that for an hermitage.

Humans are mostly an inconsiderate lot, thinking only of their own earthly comforts. You could try howling at the moon, the sun and the stars, and if your owners have a low tolerance for pain, that may buy you some freedom. But then on the bright but dangerous side, when they open the gate to feed you, run for your life and don’t look back. Being chained and caged for life is not worth the misery. Good luck.
