Chávez wants small satellites to ensure sovereignty by Patrick J. O'Donoghue --- VHeadline.com Speaking by phone to State television VTV from Jinan in China, Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez Frias has indicated the possibility of building small satellites for different uses, such as studies of the sea. "They would not have the reach that the Simon Bolivar satellite has but they would be useful in helping Venezuela advance technologically. " The Venezuelan president has also indicated that he wants to build antennas, alleging that they would not be very expensive, especially for people of the lower and middle classes, who do not have access to television via a private satellite. The state could finance such antennas, he stated, because it would keep people informed of what is happening in the rest of the national territory. "The good thing is that Venezuela would have sovereignty in its airspace." The Simon Bolivar satellite to be launched in 2008 will reach all of Latin America but there is discussion about where the satellite will be situated to ensure the greatest efficacy. Chávez Frias says that Venezuela will no longer have to hire satellites from any other country and furthermore, the United States will not be able to block Venezuela's communications.
