Also in this section: Varsity American football season underway by Fernando A. Franco M.
In the first week of Panama's varsity --- secondary school aged --- American football season, these were the results:
Jaguars 27 - Falcons 25
As the score indicates, this was a very entertaining game. Both teams put on a spectacular show.
They both demonstrated an ability to run with the ball. The Falcons went ahead by a 6-0 score on a run by Carlos Hoyos, and were later tied by a one-yard touchdown run by the Jaguars' Eduardo De Leon.
The Falcons went ahead again, 12-6, on an excellent run by Carlos Hoyos of more than 40 yards.
In the second half the Jaguars mounted a long drive, culminating in a 30-yard run by Diego Molino to tie the score.
After a Falcon turnover, the Jaguars scored for a third time on a pass from Daniel Browerman to Rey Hernandez, and then Eduardo De Leon scored two points on the conversion.
The Jaguars scored again with a 60-yard run, putting the score at 27-12.
In the fourth quarter the Falcons twice took advantage of Jaguar mistakes to score. Juan Pablo Orillac caught a pass from Alejandro Henriquez for one of these touchdowns and Carlos Hoyos ran 30 yards for the other. That latter score put the game at 27-25 and the Falcons tried to tie it with a two-point conversion. But the Jaguars defense held and the game ended with that score.
Stallions 12 - Panthers 0
This was a highly defensive game, with both quarterbacks getting repeatedly sacked and the runners unable to gain much ground.
The Stallions won it on turnovers, which they turned into scores on a pair of touchdown runs by Kenrick Belgrade.
Come see varsity football on Sundays at the Balboa Stadium, starting at 1 pm.
