Coach Palumbo dies in Arkansas

Coach Palumbo is no more. Luke C. Palumbo, who taught and coached in the Canal Zone schools for 33 years, died on September 5 in a Fayetteville, Arkansas hospice after a long illness. He was 94 years old.

Coach Palumbo, who taught the editor of this publication earth science and was a homeroom teacher at Cristobal Junior High, was an Atlantic side institution. He, the practitioner of "the treatment," was the come-uppance for generations of little wise guys and also there with understanding and a helping hand for these same kids in their times of greatest need.

Palumbo is survived by his wife Betty Palumbo, his sons Luke Todd Palumbo of Panama and James Russell Palumbo of Florida, daughters Judith Ann Palumbo-Gates of Washington state and Sara Jane Stephens of Arkansas, stepdaughters Pamela Terry Nickel of Arkansas and Vicki Terry Felig of California, and by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The remains were cremated and funeral services were held on September 10 at the First Christian Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with the Reverend Ryan Pfeiffer presiding.

A scholarship fund was created in Coach Palumbo's name. Contributions may be made to the Luke Palumbo Scholarship Fund, First Christian Church, 220 N. College Ave., Fayetteville, Ark. 72701
