Representatives of the Rainforest Alliance, the National Environmental Authority (ANAM), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) gathered on September 27 to announce some new initiatives to promote the certification of forest products. Previously it was mainly raw logs that had been certified as sustainably grown, but now these groups and agencies and various private sector entities are creating an Alliance for Certified Sustainable Products that will also get into certifying things like furniture made by small businesses. As USAID's Kermit Moh (the man in the red tie) put it, "the small and medium-sized forestry businesses have a fundamental role to play in sustainable development and international business, within the framework of globalization."
