Colon celebrates its history: Colon marks the 1903 surrender of the Colombian garrison --- two days earlier, pro-independence conspirators had called their officers to come by train to Panama City for consultations, then decoupled their train car in the middle of the jungle. La Estrella opened its safe for cash to buy prodigious amounts of rum for the soldiers, and when the troops awoke from their drunken stupor they found that they were unwanted foreigners in a newly independent Panama. So they surrendered and were allowed to sail away. There will be parades and other celebrations in Colon on this day.

ETC. Los Santos celebrates its history: On November 10, 1821 the notables in the town of La Villa de Los Santos, inspired by the independence movement that was sweeping across Spain's Latin American colonies, issued Panama's first call for independence from Spain. Within less than three weeks Panama cut its political ties with the Old World and shortly thereafter threw its lot in with Simón Bolívar's Gran Colombia. There will be parades and cultural events --- if you have never seen a float drawn by oxen, this is your big chance --- in the town of Los Santos. There will also be celebrations in several other places in Panama.
