Scenes from the Bomberos' Torchlight Parade

photos by Eric Jackson

The Cuerpo de Bomberos is older than any other part of the Panamanian government --- it was formed back when we were part of Colombia, on November 28, 1885. That anniversary is celebrated every year with the last and coolest of the November patriotic parades, a torchlight procession along Via España and Avenida Central from the banking district to Plaza Cinco de Mayo.

Some of the usual contingents were missing from this year's parade: the SINAPROC disaster relief agency and some specialized rescue units were very busy because of floods that affected nearly 100 communities and cost at least 11 lives.
