Panama Historical Society Christmas and 20th Anniversary Dinner

by the Panama Historical Society

If you have not yet already done so, please confirm your attendance to our Christmas & 20th Anniversary Celebration, on December 06, 2006. Our President, Mr. John Carlson, has secured a fancy and well-liked location, which has already been our  Christmas meeting place three times in the past twenty years, the  Trattoria d'Americas, from Chef Rafael Ciniglio. You only have a few days left to make your reservation!

See the personalized menu from which to make their selections below. The Christmas Dinner will have a cost of $26.00 and that includes entree, main  course, dessert and two glasses of wine, plus tax. Please make sure you  forward your reservations to John (jcarlson@cwpanama.net) ASAP.

JANUARY LINE UP

We had a great meeting in November, thanks to Mr. Gerry Dowden of the  Panama Broadcasting Corporation. And we can even tell you what our January 2007 presentation is going to be:

Spies, Crooks and others along the way

PHS member Sandra T. Snyder will be presenting her latest book, "Spies, Crooks and Others Along the Way."

Book Description from Amazon.com:

Sandra T. Snyder author of Living in Panama has long been known as the person to call for whatever you need to know about Panama. In her new book she takes us back to where it all began and answers that oft asked personal question, "what brought you to Panama." The answer, of course, is "a sailboat." While that is how they came to Panama, and the book addresses their sailing adventures, Spies, Crooks and Others Along the Way, not about sailing. Sailing south from San Francisco to Mexico, on to Costa Rica and Panama, the first time, presents a whole new world to this corporate executive recently retired. From Panama she and her husband's adventures continue through Guatemala, the Intercoastal Waterway of the U.S. and all the way to the Canadian Boarder. Before eventually returning to Panama, they will sail the islands of the Caribbean from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad and across the Spanish Main. Spies, Crooks and Others Along the Way is a collection of short stories about the people met along the way. There are some interesting people, too, from shrimpers to Ambassadors; from farmers to Presidents; questionable characters and more. All the while, her continuing love of Panama shines through.

About Sandra

Sandra Snyder was born in Virginia, received her degrees in business  administration and English from the San Jose State University in  California. She has lived and traveled all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. She understands relocation and living in a new country. She is the author of the guide for foreigners, Living in Panama, and has written numerous articles on relocation and Panama for the Corporate Relocation News, Business Panama, Boquete Times and La Prensa. Numerous articles have been written about her and her book in Visitante, Boquete Times and La Prensa as well. She is well known as not only the person to ask when wanting to know more about Panama, but the guest speaker for numerous embassies, clubs, and newcomer groups for orientation to Panama. She received the Distinguished American Citizen Award from the US Embassy in 2003 and the Margarita Levi Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Who's New Club in 2004. As you can imagine she has met a lot of interesting people in her travels and her new book is a collection of short stories about them. Spies, Crooks and Others Along the Way provides a glimpse into sailing Central and South America as well as the Caribbean and Panama.

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT:

The Panama Historical Society is extremely pleased --- and proud --- to announce our 20th Annual Anniversary Dinner. There might have been many among us (myself included) who doubted that we'd see this day, but here we are!

Please, if you can fit it into your holiday schedule, try to make this event...all of us (and especially Carlos and John) are hoping to see all of you. "Rafa" Ciniglio has hosted our annual dinner twice in the past and this year should be better than ever --- his food is, truly, gourmet --- and the wine selection? Well, you will be pleased.

Arrival time at the Trattoria d'Americas restaurant should be about 6 to 6:30 p.m. to permit socializing and recounting twenty years of association.

Members, associates, and guests are welcome, but you must e-mail either  Carlos Hassan at chassan@panamahistoricalsociety.com or John Carlson at jcarlson@cwpanama.net to confirm your reservation and to advise your "main course" selection so that we have a minimum of bother for dinner seating and serving --- there will be waiters available to take your pay-as-you-drink orders. The dinner will start at about 7:15 to 7:30 PM --- no speeches, no fuss, and it should be all over before your normal bed-times --- the "antipasto" choices shown on the menu will be on the tables, and the dessert can be selected verabally with your waiter at the end of your meal.

Thank you one and all for these twenty years of memories. Carlos and I are working on an improved website which will have as much history of what we have done in 20 years as we can muster, plus some additional  attractive features, such as a "swap shop" for buying/trading/selling stuff (remember --- "one man's junk is another man's treasure) Okay? See  you there!

Any questions: call John at 211-0186. Bring your wallets and/or credit  cards.

Please feel free to contact our PHS President John Carlson or the Secretary, Carlos Hassan for details on the Anniversary Dinner.

See you at the 20th Anniversary Celebration!
