Tuesday, January 9 Day of the Martyrs ETC. Day of the Martyrs: This is the anniversary of the events of January 1964 in which 23 Panamanians and 4 Americans were killed and hundreds wounded on either side. It was a dispute over which flags would fly over the old Canal Zone, which in turn was a cipher for who would be sovereign there. It was the beginning of the end of the Canal Zone and is still the subject of much controversy and mythology, on the one side because a good part of the Zonian community still seems not to know what hit them and on the other side because the founders of both of Panama's major political traditions, Dr. Arnulfo Arias and General Omar Torrijos, were actively hostile to the outpouring of nationalist sentiment but in later years sought to falsify their stands for opportunistic political reasons. For many Panamanians this will be a day at the beach, but the ideological heirs to the leftists who were the first protagonists on the Panamanian side of the confrontation --- people of all political persuasions quickly joined the fray and Panama severed its diplomatic relations with the United States for a few months --- will march to the Jardin de Paz cemetery in El Chorrillo where Ascanio Arosemena, a high school student who was the first to die, is buried. This is not likely to be an occasion for violence, but this year it will surely be used to highlight opposition to a proposed US-Panama free trade agreement.
